El Clasico’ a chance for Barca to bounce back, says Xavi
‘El Clasico’ a chance for Barca. Sunday’s El Clasico showdown against Real Madrid will give Barcelona a chance to regain confidence, manager Xavi Hernandez said on Saturday after his side’s terrifying Champions League result.
Barca has won seven games in a row in LaLiga and leads the table with 22 points, ahead of domestic and European champions Real on goal difference.
However, they won only one of their four matches in the Champions League, and for the second season in a row, they are eliminated from Europe’s elite competition in the group stage.
“I’m always an optimist and I see this game as a great opportunity for us. We are (LaLiga) leaders and we want to remain so from Sunday,” Xavi told a news conference.
“We want to put the past behind us. If we are positive, everything will be fine.
Barca salvaged a late 3-3 draw against Inter Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday but are three points behind and eight behind Bayern Munich.
“I tried to get the players to recover emotionally. It’s time to stick to our ideals and stay on the pitch,” Xavi said.
Barca, which has been struggling with several injuries lately, will nevertheless be at the service of defender Jules Kunde, said Xavi, as the player has recovered from a hamstring injury.
“He is very well, 100%, and happy. He feels very good. He trained very hard and is available for Sunday,” said Xavi.
Former Barca midfield powerhouse Xavi was brought in by the club’s new board last season to help them rebuild after failing to re-sign Lionel Messi.
However, there has been speculation over his future as Barca edge closer to being knocked out of the Champions League and entering Europe’s second-tier Europa League competition for the second year in a row.
“The president has given me full confidence. The day I don’t see this clearly, I’ll go home… The day I think I’m not part of the solution, I’ll go home,” Xavi said.
“Sunday’s game is three points, but at the same time, you will leave the game with a boost in morale. It is a vital game for us and Real Madrid.
“Let’s see who will come out on top. Our project has only just started, we can’t ruin everything now. We have to calm down and be patient. We are still under construction. Falling out of the Champions League is sad, but it will continue. He thinks that we are on the right track.”
